Världen står inför en dubbelt akut kris: klimatförändringarna accelererar med extremväder, stigande temperaturer och kollapsande ekosystem – samtidigt som industriellt djurjordbruk orsakar lidande för miljarder djur varje år. Produktionen bidrar med 14,5 procent av världens växthusgasutsläpp och driver avskogning, vattenbrist och antibiotikaresistens.
Det gäller inte bara människors matvanor – även våra husdjur påverkar. Världens 373 miljoner tamkatter äter köttbaserat foder som står för upp till 9 procent av den globala konsumtionen av boskapsdjur, och i länder som USA hela 20 procent.
Men en ny lösning växer fram: labbkött, även kallat odlat kött (cultivated meat). Det är äkta kött producerat från djurceller i bioreaktorer, utan att slakta djur och med avsevärt lägre miljöpåverkan.
Länderna som leder utvecklingen av odlat kött
- Singapore: Första landet i världen att godkänna kommersiell försäljning av labbkött (2020).
- USA: FDA och USDA godkände 2023 odlad kyckling från Upside Foods och GOOD Meat.
- Israel: Godkände 2024 Aleph Farms odlade nötkött, anpassat för kulturella och religiösa krav.
- Australien: Godkände 2025 Vows odlade japanska vaktelkött.
- Storbritannien: Först i Europa (utanför EU) att godkänna odlat kött för husdjursfoder 2024.
Dessa länder visar att odlat kött inte bara är säkert – det är en realistisk lösning för att mätta 10 miljarder människor år 2050 utan att förstöra planeten.
Motstånd mot labbkött – lobbyintressen och politik
- USA: Sju delstater, inklusive Florida, Texas och Alabama, har infört tillfälliga förbud (2 år) mot odlat kött, ofta med svepande hänvisningar till ”tradition” och ”säkerhet”.
- Italien: Införde 2023 ett totalförbud mot produktion, import och försäljning av odlade livsmedel och foder.
Dessa beslut skyddar den traditionella köttindustrin och förlänger både klimatkrisen och djurens lidande.

Tekniska framsteg som billigare bioreaktorer och skalbar produktion väntas göra odlat kött konkurrenskraftigt i pris och kvalitet inom två decennier.
